Why Bother Taking Nitric Oxide Supplements?

First there were impotence cures like acupuncture and powdered rhinoceros horn. Then came the miraculous little blue pill, Viagra. But Viagra is expensive. Is there a more affordable alternative? Some studies suggest that nitric oxide supplements are the answer for better sexual performance for men. Always ask your doctor if it is safe for you to take nitric oxide supplements. If you are already taking Viagra, do not take nitric oxide supplements as this could cause a bad reaction.

Nitric oxide or NO works to ease impotency by improving the body’s circulation to extremities. If the penis cannot get enough blood flowing to it, it will not become erect. NO helps to expand the blood vessels in a process called vasodilation. In order to expand, the muscles of the blood vessels need to relax so that more oxygen-carrying blood can reach the penis as well as other body parts.

Award Winning Studies

Studies as far back as 1988 showed that nitric oxide helped keep the male body healthy, including improving prostate function as well as improving blood circulation and helping the body build lean muscle. NO also helps keep platelets in the blood working efficiently. Studies on NO’s effects on heart health would give a 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to three American scientists – Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad.

Although these studies were done with nitric oxide and the amino acid that helps produce it, L-arginine, they were not necessarily done with nitric oxide supplements that today’s consumers can purchase online or at their health food stores. Nutritional supplements come from varied sources. These sources can affect the quality of the supplement. Since this is a self-regulating industry, there is no government agency to make sure supplements meet certain quality standards.

Possible Side Effects

Anyone considering taking nitric oxide supplements should be aware of any dangerous side effects. These side effects rarely happen, but should they pop up, you should seek treatment right away. Dangerous NO supplement side effects include:

  • Uncontrollable trembling
  • Fainting due to sudden drop in blood pressure
  • Problems keeping your balance
  • Problems breathing such as wheezing or developing asthma-like symptoms
  • Vomiting more than once
  • Skin breaking out into hives
  • Skin becoming itchy.

Other side effects tend to go away after a few days of taking nitric oxide supplements. If they do not go away in a few days, contact your doctor. These common mild side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea, usually without vomiting, but if vomiting occurs, it’s only once
  • Dry mouth
  • Constant fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Sudden bloating from water retention.

Food Sources

Both nitric oxide and L-arginine are present in many foods. Eating these foods could be a practical solution to taking supplements, especially if the NO supplements give you bad side effects. Add more of these foods to your diet:

  • Beets
  • Green, leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and collard greens
  • Soybeans
  • Soy products like soy milk or tofu
  • Cold water fish like tuna, mackerel or salmon
  • Eggs
  • Watermelon
  • Kiwi
  • Legumes like peanuts and chick peas
  • Kidney beans
  • Artichokes.
