The Many Possibilities Of Unexplained Infertility

There are a number of explanations given for unexplained fertility including drinking alcohol excessively, smoking, etc. However, none of the explanations given by scientist have been conclusive.

According to medical studies, nearly 60 percent of patients reported unexplained fertility just a few years back. However, in the last several years, authors said the number has decreased but is still relatively high: about 25 percent. Based on information from several textbooks that summarized studies going back to 1950, there is an average unexplained infertility percentage of 16.7 percent. Today, though, some authors have reported percentage of zero to six percent.

Excessive Possibilities: Explaining Unexplained Infertility Is Just Not That Easy

Now, if someone considers ovulatory function evaluation, semen analysis, a hysterosalpingogram, laparoscopy and post coital exam, the preliminary assessment for any couple unable to get pregnant after 12 months of trying would be considered unexplained infertility before any tests are conducted. If someone accepts the atypical parameter for being the elucidation, using diagnostic tests just slightly decreases the unexplained infertility.

Other reasons for possible unexplained infertility include:

  • Alcohol consumption

  • Excessive amounts of caffeine intake

  • Smoking

However, these are not conclusive for unexplained infertility. For instance, it’s important to consider the success rates of gamete intrafallopian transfer in couples who have unexplained infertility, which are up to 28 percent. No doubt this is an increase over the more controlled ovarian hyperstimulation when it’s united with intrauterine insemination with washed semen.

You might be wondering what GIFT does besides boosting the amount of gametes available. There are three things it does:

  • It removes the necessity for transporting sperm through the fallopian tube

  • It helps with the release of oocyte from the ovary

  • It helps pick up the oocyte by the fallopian tube

If one were to conclude why unexplained fertility occurred in some couples, it would be that one or more defects are present.

According to IVF information, defects that lead to issues with implantation are fairly common and establish another reason for unexplained infertility, which is presently being looked it and investigated. Examining the factors like integrins could actually reduce the number of patients with this condition; but, there is no help as to what therapy could assist them in conceiving.

Some folks feel that an overlap in infertility and recurring pregnancy loss. For example, doctors may look for antiphospholipid syndrome and order tests usually done in patients suffering with recurring pregnancy loss for couples with unexplained infertility. If people accepted this as a reason for infertility, then not testing would place a number of them in the unexplained infertility section.

If a doctor does not feel treating endometriosis with laparoscopy will progress pregnancy rates, then he/she should not perform it. However, according to some data, surgical treatment has led to tremendous pregnancy rate improvements…even when the endometriosis minimally existed. It’s another possible explanation for unexplained infertility.

No doubt the resolution to unexplained infertility is a problem that cannot be easily explained especially with so many factors to take into consideration. Without extensive testing done to mark a person’s unexplained infertility, no explanation or treatment for this issue will be released in the near future.
