The Benefits of Fat Burning Foods

The whole idea of fat burning foods takes us away from the concept of calories as the main measure of what we eat. Although it’s important to eat the right number of calories to maintain your health the fat burning foods concepts suggests that we should look at the food and weigh up the pros and cons. We know that food contains three major sets of nutrients, fat, protein and carbohydrates. We also know that 1 gram of fat has 9 calories and 1 g of the other two nutrients only has 4 grams in each of them.

But before stopping fat in your diet remember that the body needs fat to function. However there are healthy fats and unhealthy fats. So we must take sensible amounts of varied foods to maintain our health. Carbohydrates and protein are both harder for the body to digest and so energy is released slowly and the body uses up extra calories just in the act of eating and digesting the food.

If we eat too many calories and do not work them off then the body stores the excess energy as fat and most fat cells are around the stomach, chest and hips and that’s why people get fatter there first. It’s only when these fat cells are full that the arms and legs get fatter too.

Every food has the capability to produce

fat on the body just by eating too much of it. However, very few people could actually eat enough apples, oranges or carrots in a day to make them fat. Their calorie levels are just too low and they have fiber that makes the person feel full up.

On top of being quite low in calories, these foods also have other attributes which leads to fat being reduced rather than increased. Some types of food have ample vitamins and other nutrients which are known to increase the basal rate metabolism which means that the body burns calories, and hence fat, quicker. Other foods, which are high in fiber, leave the person feeling full up after eating just a small amount. There are also foods which, as well as being low in calories, require the digestive system to work harder to break down the nutrients and hence use up more calories just by eating. All of these fat burning foods must be cooked in the correct manner to achieve all of these benefits. Deep frying is out; boiling, steaming or poaching is in.

Portion sizes is also important and if they are the correct amount then an improvement in fat held by the body will be seen over time.

Fat burning foods can only do so much on their own, regular exercise should take place to help remove the fat which has previously been stored around the body. Do this and eat foods that minimize the risk of taking on more fat is the way forward.

Fat Burning Foods and their Attributes

Most fruits are good but citrus fruits are very good and are high in vitamin C. Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines and grapefruit have the power to speed up the metabolism causing the body to burn fat quicker. Other fruits are also good sources of vitamin C, fruits like apples, strawberries, grapes and plums all contain high amounts of this excellent vitamin known to help the body consume food and burn fat. Some people highly recommend citrus fruit only breakfasts saying that eating this type of breakfast regularly cuts the fat profile.

Other fruits known to be fat burning foods are bananas, mangoes, pomegranates, papaya and blueberries and they are also said to reduce bad cholesterol in the body whilst improving the metabolism.

Eating foods high in fiber has the added benefit of filling up. The person no longer feels hungry because of the fiber passing through his or her stomach. Oats are a very good source of insoluble fiber and do not add to the number of calories consumed.

Other fat burning foods include vegetables, lentils, eggs, poultry, fatty fish and walnuts and almonds. However with these foods certain things must be made clear, only cook in a healthy fashion, no unhealthy oils and steaming, boiling or poaching is better still. Avoid any fatty bits from the poultry and stick to salmon, trout, mackerel or tuna as your fatty fish. They all have lots of omega 3 fatty acids. And always take your food with lots of water to ensure that you remain hydrated.
