The benefits of calcium citrate

Calcium citrate is a dietary supplement that can help battle brittle bone disease.

Calcium citrate is a manufactured dietary supplement derived from citric acid. This addition of citrate means that the supplement is easier for the body to utilize and that it can taken at any time of the day. Calcium citrate has a number of health benefits and will help promote healthy bodily functions.

Maintenance of calcium levels

Calcium is an essential mineral in many normal bodily functions – it is used in formation of bones; blood vessel function; hormone secretion; transmission of neuronal messages and preservation of cells. Using a dietary supplement such as calcium citrate is one way to maintain calcium at a sufficient level.

Osteoporosis prevention

Osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease, is a skeletal disease which weakens bone structure. As we age our calcium levels gradually decrease, osteoporosis is more often seen in older men and women, therefore, for this group of people taking a calcium citrate dietary supplement may provide some protection against the development of osteoporosis.

Excess phosphate

Whilst phosphate is an essential mineral in the body it can also cause adverse effects if its levels are too high. Calcium citrate will combine with phosphate in the intestine and reduce absorption levels of this mineral; calcium citrate will also increase the rate of excretion from the body of phosphate thus helping to control the levels of this essential mineral.

Correct growth and development

Calcium is stored in the bones and used in the whole body, this makes it an essential nutrient for good health and strength, as well as normal growth. Lack of calcium in children may result in physical abnormalities as they grow older. A calcium citrate supplement may be beneficial for children who do not consume enough calcium from their diet.

Reducing high blood pressure

Research has indicated that the correct dose of calcium citrate may be beneficial in reducing high blood pressure; patients ingesting large amounts of calcium in their diet or via a supplement were found to exhibit a slightly reduced blood pressure reading. Whilst a supplement containing calcium combined with citrate may help in fighting high blood pressure it should not be used to replace any medication or treatment prescribed by your health care practitioner.

Other benefits

When taken in conjunctio

n with other mineral supplements, including zinc, manganese and magnesium, calcium in combination with citrate plays a role in supporting a healthy immune system and in treating related diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome.

Associated risks

As with any supplement taking too much calcium can have an adverse effect on health. High levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcaemia) have been known to cause renal insufficiency as well as calcification of some soft tissue, although this is a very rare condition. High levels of calcium in the urine, as a result of supplement intake rather than from the diet, may contribute to the development of kidney stones which are extremely painful. Too much calcium may also cause constipation and negatively affect the absorption of some minerals such as iron and zinc. There is some evidence to suggest that a high intake of calcium is linked to prostate cancer but this is an area of ongoing research.
