Six Reasons Women Might Suffer With Vaginal Irritation

There are six common causes for vaginal irritation, burning and itching such as menopause, chemical irritants and STDs with several possible treatment options including antibiotics, ointments, cream and suppositories.

Irritation or itching on the body, regardless of where, can cause distress. However, when it’s in a sensitive region such as the vagina, it can be rather uncomfortable. The majority of genital itching and irritation is not a big concern. However, they are symptoms of an infection so it’s not a bad idea to get a checkup from your doctor if you have some vaginal irritation.

Several Reasons For Vaginal Irritation, Burning and Itching

There are six common causes of vaginal irritation, itching and burning:

1 – Yeast Infection – Three out of four women will experience a yeast infection at some time during their life. It generally takes place when there is an over-excessive amount of yeast growing in the vagina, which can occur when a woman has intercourse, is pregnant, is taking antibiotics and a weakened immune system. Besides vaginal irritation, you’ll also see a white, cheesy and thick discharge.

2 – Sexually Transmitted Disease – Any sexually transmitted disease can cause vaginal irritation and itching including genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc.

3 – Chemical Irritants – There are all kinds of chemicals that can cause irritation of the vagina.

4 – Menopause – When menopause strikes, it causes a reduction in estrogen production, which will cause the walls of the vagina to thin and dry out. This will cause vaginal irritation and itching.

5 – Lichen Sclerosis – This is an extremely rare condition that will cause thin white patches to appear on the skin, particularly in the vulva region. These patches can cause permanent scars. Usually it’s postmenopausal women who have this condition.

6 – Bacterial Vaginosis – It’s possible for the vagina to have bacteria in it but having the wrong kind of bacteria is an infection waiting to happen. Along with vaginal irritation and itching, you could also suffer with a foul, fishy smell, burning and discharge.

How Is Vaginal Irritation, Itching and Burning Treated

Believe it or not, but most of the vaginal irritation will clear up on its own. However, if irritation persists, a doctor will conduct a pelvic exam. The doctor will likely to a sample to find the root of your problem.

  1. STDs and Vaginosis are handled by taking antibiotics.
  2. Menopause-related itching is treated with estrogen tablets or cream
  3. Yeast infections are treated for antifungal medications. These are inserted into the vagina by way of creams, suppositories or ointments. Or, they can be consumed orally. They can be taken in one, three or seven-day format. If you have never experienced a yeast infection, you should see your doctor before beginning an over-the-counter medication.
  4. Other kinds of vaginal irritation or itching will respond to steroid lotions and creams and reduce inflammation.

Young girls need to repeat burning, itching or vaginal irritation to their doctor, as they could have been sexually abused.
