Sciatica symptoms and their common causes

Any sciatica sufferer will relate to you all of the sciatica symptoms, the low back pain, the pain then travels down the legs, the feelings of tingling or numbness and in every sufferer the indications will vary slightly.

But sciatica symptoms, although real, are generally caused by other conditions which then affect the sciatic nerve. The irritation and pain can be caused by the nerve after being affected by the underlying condition. The spinal discs and their adjoining cartilage are a major cause of pain. Either over time or because of injury or illness the discs compress against each other causing severe pain especially if the person makes a move in a certain way.

Other sources of pain come from the muscles around the sciatic nerve. Some sciatic symptoms of pain are caused because of the interaction of the piriformis muscle which is adjacent to the sciatic nerve. The tension and stress produces the pain.

There are also other conditions which have sciatica symptoms but are caused by the spinal column being restricted in some way meaning that the flow of all the required nutrients and blood produces the sciatica.

Sciatica can be treated but it is not the pain that is the concern to the doctor. The doctor will want to deal with the underlying condition and when that is dealt with then the sciatic symptoms will disappear on their own. If the pain is severe then the doctor may prescribe painkillers but generally over the counter pain killers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can be used. The doctor will probably refer you to a physical therapist to identify the correct exercise regime to assist your condition.

Most people with sciatica realize that it is a long term condition and is likely to return over the years. For this reason regular specialist exercise to minimize the pain and discomfort is undertaken everyday. Added to a healthy lifestyle and good diet can help keep the painful sciatica symptoms to a minimum.
