Biotin is one of the B-complex vitamins and is required by the human body in order to function correctly and efficiently. The human intestine contains bacteria, which produces biotin but it can also be found in foods including meat, whole grains, dairy products, nuts and lentils. The healthy amount of biotin is 30-100 mcg and can easily be acquired through a balanced diet. The biotin in processed food is often destroyed in the process so this food type should be avoided. For those people lacking in biotin a supplement can be taken to increase levels. Biotin plays an important role in aiding both growth and metabolism. Along with other essential B vitamins, biotin turns carbohydrates and fats into energy and therefore also helps to encourage weight loss. Biotin is also important for healthy hair and skin and biotin supplements are often recommended for those with brittle nails and hair and some skin problems. With proper usage and dosage there should no biotin side effects and taking supplements to boost levels in the body is very safe. Even people taking high doses have not reported any biotin side effects and as it is a water-soluble vitamin any excess will be excreted harmlessly in the urine. Decreasing the dosage of biotin should be all it takes to stop any effects that do occur for some reason.

Biotin side effects have been known to occur when mixed with alcohol or antibiotics. For example anti-seizure medicines and lipid-lowering medicines could have negative biotin side effects when supplements are taken. Also when taken in large quantities simultaneously with vitamin B5 supplements a serious condition, eosinophilic pleuropericardial effusion can develop.

Although there is little evidence that biotin side effects will occur in humans if the recommended dosage is taken, there have been a few cases of side effects when biotin was taken in high dosage or for a prolonged period of time. For example there have been reports of skin infections and also of peoples insulin levels being affected. People with diabetes should take extra care when taking biotin supplements. Additionally there was a study performed on pregnant rats, whereby the rats were given high doses of biotin. The chance of the ratÂ’s sufferings from a miscarriage increases as the level of biotin was increased. These results have not been confirmed to be true in human females but pregnant women should take extra care none the less.

The daily intake allowance recommended for biotin is 300 micrograms a day, which is the dose used is many of the biotin nutritional supplements available. If you do begin to notice any biotin side effects, especially if you are combining it with other medication or supplement you should contact your doctor immediately. Your doctor will be able to identify the problem and whether or not it was triggered by the consumption of biotin supplements.
