Overcoming depression with 10 simple tricks

Everyone has times of great sadness and most often we have the tools, support or experiential knowledge to get us through those moments and return to a happy and balanced state. However sometimes am extreme sadness or depression can occur, either as a response to a situation or circumstance or due to a medical condition. In some cases medical treatment or psychotherapy is required but for others some natural home treatments can provide a way of overcoming depression without the need for medication.

Think positive

Overcoming depression includes setting goals in order to motivate us and get our brains functioning in a positive way. Don’t simply think about goals; actually write them down using a pen and paper as the physical act of doing so will trigger something in the brain, firing neurons and hormones causing a positive charge of energy.

Sleep 8 hours

Getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night is another important factor when it comes to overcoming depression. Too much or too little sleep can cause an imbalance of chemicals so for a healthy body and mind, get enough sleep.


Exercise is simply one of the best possible things you can do to help yourself in overcoming depression. If it is possible try to get an hour of cardio exercise a day ad you will really feel the benefit of those endorphins rushing around your body. If an hour a day is too much, then just do what you can. Even getting outside for a walk or doing something to raise the heartbeat will have a positive effect.


Forgiveness, whether yourself or someone else, can be an important way to relieve sadness and guilt. People who hold grudges can suffer more from depression so through forgiveness you can take that burden off your shoulders.

Stop complaining

Overcoming depression sometimes simply requires us to stop complaining and to start showing some gratitude. Sit down and make a list of all the things in your life that you are grateful for and you should start to feel a little better.

Go for a walk

A lack of sunlight can cause the onset of a medical depression in some people, a condition particularly common during the short days of winter. Whenever you see the chance, get outside and go for a walk with a friend or read a book in the garden.

Drink a lot of water

Many people do not drink as much water as they should do and are therefore suffering from dehydration. Drinking more water will help you on the way to overcoming depression as well as increase your energy levels and productivity.


Maintaining old friendships as well as creating new ones is probably the most important way of overcoming depression. When you are feeling down it is easy to isolate yourself and have a lack of interest in seeing friends. Push yourself into socialising because these people are your support system, who are there to listen and to show that you are loved an appreciated. If you offer these qualities to a friend you will be sure to get them back.

Relax your mind

Reading is a great way to relax your body and mind and allows you to temporarily let go of reality. Whatever hectic duties your day involves, create some personal tome time to be alone and get stuck into a good book.

Write a diary

Journaling your day is popular way of overcoming depression as writing your thought down on paper can free your mind or allow you to see a solution to a problem. Alternatively, if you would rather not write about your day, try writing a fiction story, which will allow you to escape for some time from the real world.
