Liver cleanse

Many of us live lives that have a negative effect on our normal, healthy bodily processes. Continuous ingestion of processed foods, pollutions and chemicals coupled with increased levels of stress means that our livers may become increasingly overworked and therefore less efficient. The role of the liver, in the body, is to process the toxins and fats from our body – it is essential therefore to maintain its healthy function and a liver cleanse is one way of doing this.

There are a number of foods that may be included in the diet in order to help maintain optimum liver function.

Grapefruit will boost the natural cleansing function of the liver – it has high levels of vitamin C and is known to be antioxidant rich.

Leafy green vegetables, cabbage and cruciferous vegetables

Leafy green vegetables, such as curly kale, spinach, chicory, etc. are very high in the plant chlorophylls known to cleanse toxins from the blood. These green vegetables may be eaten cooked, raw or even juiced and provide high levels of protection to the liver as they are able to cleanse chemicals, pesticides and heavy metals from the system.

Cruciferous vegetables are beneficial to enzyme production in the liver, this in turn lowers the risk of cancer developing.

Apples, when ingested, are able to cleanse toxins from the digestive tract making the job of the liver easier.

Healthy oils

Consumption of healthy oils such as olive oil, hemp oil and flax seed oil all support optimal liver function when consumed in moderation. By absorbing harmful toxins the burden of the liver is lessened.

Whole grains

Whole grains are known to improve the metabolism of fats in the body, this, in turn, improves liver function and aids in the decongestion of the liver.

Lemons and limes

Fruits containing high levels of vitamin C are known to contribute to the synthesizing of toxic materials in the body into water soluble substances, thereby relieving the burden on the liver.

Walnuts contribute to the detoxification of ammonia in the liver due to their high amino acid content. Walnuts are also high in omega 3 fatty acids, also essential to liver function.
