The fungus that is the cause of this infection flourishes in the moist, warm parts of the genitals. The symptoms of the infection appear as a red rash with patchy areas and the affected area of the skin is itchy and the skin may also peel or crack. The patchy rash has a distinctive red edge to it.

To treat jock itch creams or anti-fungal sprays can be used that are available over the counter. These creams and sprays contain active ingredients such as terbinafine, clotrimazole and miconazole and these should be used as per the directions. The itch can be intense and there will be strong urge to scratch but try not to do this. To help in the reduction of the effects of the itchiness use a cold compress. It is important to keep the affected area dry and clean and to lessen the irritation on the skin wear loose clothing. After you have used the over the counter medication for a period of two weeks and your skin is still red and itchy then it’s time to make an appointment with your doctor. You will be given a prescribed topical or an oral anti-fungal medication.

To prevent jock itch developing keep the area dry and clean and take a shower or bath every day. It is also important to dry your inner thighs and genital area carefully and thoroughly. If your infection is active keep a separate towel so you can dry the area in order to stop the fungus from spreading. Wear sports clothes that fit well because if your skin becomes irritated there is an increased risk of jock itch developing. After each workout make sure that you wash all of your gym clothes and don’t share clothes or towels with others as jock itch is a contagious skin condition. After any physical activity change out of your damp clothes and try to change your underwear once a day.

If your jock itch is not responding to the over counter treatment you have used it is important to make an appointment with your doctor where you will receive another medication.

It appears that jock itch can occur in people who have diabetes or a compromised immune system. And if you suffer from persistent episodes of this skin condition it is important to speak with your doctor to ensure there is no underlying health condition.

If the area becomes hot, emits pus, spreads suddenly, becomes swollen or if a fever develops it is essential to seek medical help. These symptoms could be the result of a secondary bacterial infection developing.
