Huperzine A

Huperzine A is a substance that is taken from the Chinese Club Moss plant. It is made by getting rid of impurities from the substance of all other elements and then manipulation is carried out in the laboratory. And because of this treatment method that is used this is the reason why this medication is not recognised as a health supplement. It is in fact categorized as a drug.

People who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and/or other age related problems with memory report seeing an improvement in their memory and their ability to learn when they have used this drug. Taking this medication is also beneficial to people who have myasthenia gravis which is a disease that affects the muscles. Using this substance helps to increase the energy levels and also helps to raise mental alertness. Huperzine A also gives protection to the nervous system if damage was caused by nerve gas.

There have been reports that using Huperzine A may be effective in the treatment of memory problems and claims to actually improve memory. This medication is also useful in helping to improve the behaviour of patients who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, senile dementia and multi-infarct dementia.

Because Huperzine A causes acetylcholine levels in the body to increase it is seen as having a benefit for patients who are suffering from the muscular disorder called myasthenia gravis. There are claims from patients who suffer from this disorder that the effects of this medication appear to last longer than the traditional medication such as Neostigmine. A full study in a controlled environment is required to confirm this is in fact the case. The other claim of offering protection to the nervous system if affected by nerve gas also requires to be confirmed by carrying out full and complete research. This would also apply to claims that patients report an increase in their energy levels and their mental alertness.

If Huperzine A is taken over a short period of time by adults it appears to be that no side effects have been experienced. However, if this medication is taken over a longer period of time there have been reports of complications occurring such as nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, diarrhoea, sweating, cramping and an increase in heart rate. Should you experience any of these side effects stop taking the medication immediately.

Pregnant women and women who are breast feeding should not take Huperzine A. Other groups of people who should avoid using this medication are people who have cardiovascular disorders, peptic ulcer, disease of the lungs or specific lung conditions, gastrointestinal problems or people who suffer from epilepsy.

Huperzine A can be dispensed in the range of 30mcg to 200mcg and as always consult with your doctor before taking this medication and ensure you are prescribed the correct dosage. The doctor will also be able to take into consideration prior to prescribing this medication any other health issues you may have.
