Gluten is formed from several different proteins and is used to thicken food, to add texture and create chewiness.

What foods contain gluten?

Gluten is present in an enormous range of the foods we eat, but it is especially present in wheat or grain products such as bread, cakes, biscuits, sweets and puddings.

Bread crumbs are often used to thicken up soups, sauces and stews and it is an ingredient of burgers, sausages and pizza’s.

Does gluten cause the body harm?

Some people are intolerant to gluten and if you have ever come across a person who has celiac disease, they are suffering from intolerance to gluten. Other people suffer from a wheat allergy and others have gluten sensitivity. If it gluten is introduced to their diet they suffer a number of problems.

Why does a gluten free diet help weight loss?

Mainly it’s because a gluten free diet consists of fresh vegetables, fish, meat and fruit, all of which are healthy and contain very little fat. Weight loss is usually rapid and if you can resist the temptation of bread and sweet products, you will easily maintain your new found weight loss.

I have seen gluten free products in my supermarket?

There are gluten free products such as bread, rice and biscuits, but they tend to be more expensive than ordinary products and the taste is not the same.

You can take your pick from the gluten free products on the shelves and there are more than you think.

You don’t need to starve on a gluten free diet, for example great breakfast choices are omelettes, fruit and yogurt, lunch can consist of chicken with chips and salad and the supper can include a tasty soup.
