High blood sugar levels

Blood sugar, or blood glucose, is essential for overall good health and fitness. The blood sugar level is just that – the level of glucose in the blood and in healthy people this should remain steady at between 4 – 8 millimoles per litre. High blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, is common amongst diabetics and is the result of consuming too much food and insufficient insulin.   • Increase need to urinate

  • Drowsiness

  • Nausea

  • Vision disturbance

  • Extreme hunger and/or thirst


Patients initially diagnosed with high blood sugar levels are first advised to make changes to their diet and increase levels of exercise. Taking steps to eliminate refined sugar from the diet goes a long way in stabilizing levels of blood sugar. Maintaining a stable blood sugar level will prevent many of the associated complications that come with elevated levels.

In individuals where blood sugar levels continue to fluctuate, despite dietary changes, medication may be prescribed, including, in some cases, insulin injections which may be self administered. Taking steps to reduce and maintain healthy levels of blood sugar is relatively easy and essential in order to enjoy good health and fitness.


Exercising is

an excellent method of stabilizing levels of blood sugar since it utilizes the excess glucose in the blood. Walking, jogging, cycling or swimming are all excellent exercise methods which in addition to the many health benefits for the heart and lungs will also help prevent the problems associated with erratic blood sugar levels.

Lose weight

Diabetes 2 is a known risk factor of obesity – losing weight will immediately improve and stabilize blood sugar levels. Dietary changes and increased levels of exercise will both aid weight loss and benefit overall health as well as blood sugar levels.

Interestingly some herbal teas, specifically chamomile and cinnamon, as well as consuming almonds are thought to be beneficial in lowering blood sugar levels. Although it is not known why.
