BMI test

The purpose of a BMI test is to determine the percentage of a person’s body fat. There are a number of methods that can be used to establish this information.

What is BMI

BMI stands for body mass index and is concerned with an individual’s body weight and the excess body fat they are carrying. There are a number of BMI tests that can be used in order to acquire this information with one of the most accurate being a test that requires the individual to be weighed whilst under water. This method is considered to be one of the most forms of BMI test, although it is an expensive and time-consuming procedure. Other methods include using a skin calliper whilst another is based around the peaks and pounds formulation. Both of these methods are used more regularly and are still considered to produce accurate results.

BMI test using height and weight

There is another very simple way of calculating BMI that can even be done at home or with help from online tools. This BMI test is based on the individual’s height and weight measurements so all you need is a bathroom scale and measuring tape. Find out how much you way in pounds and measure your height in inches. Take your height measurement and then square it, so if your height is 60 inches, you have to times 60 by 60 giving you 3600. You then divide your body weight by this answer and once you have a result you must multiply it by 703. The answer that comes out is your BMI. Using Internet tools and calculators will give you the same result except you enter the information and it does the maths for you. It will also automatically tell you what category you fall into, i.e. whether you are of a healthy weight, overweight, obese or underweight.

What does my BMI tell me?

Once you have completed your BMI test you will know your body mass and therefore can find out whether or not you are at your optimum healthy weight and if not by how much you are under or over weight. Online tests will account for factors such as your age and gender. Typically any BMI under 18.5 is considered to be underweight, which could be posing increased health risks to your body. Such symptoms of being underweight include tiredness, a weakened immune system, anaemia, infertility and heart issues. Anyone underweight should take action to safely and slowly increase their weight until they reach their healthy weight percentile. A healthy weight is anyone with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. A continued balanced diet and regular exercise is important for maintaining this weight. Those BMI test result of between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight and any higher than this is called obese. The higher the BMI test result the greater the risk of health problems including diabetes, asthma, heart problems and hypertension. Minor lifestyle changes such as eating a more nutritious diet and taking regular exercise is often all that is needed to shed a few pounds and bring the BMI down to a healthier level.
