Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects

This medication has multiple effects on the cardiovascular system and is a member of a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers. Calcium channels are receptors that are placed in a variety of areas within the cardiovascular system. When these channels become blocked it results in the blood vessels relaxing and lowering the heart rate. This results in the blood pressure being reduced and also the heart does not have to work as hard. This medication is successful in reducing the symptoms of raised blood pressure and pain in the chest but side effects may occur.

Unwelcome amlodipine besylate side effects may include yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), redness or warmth underneath the skin, joint and muscle pain, and an increase in the need to urinate. If you experience any of these side effects contact your doctor immediately.

Although amlodipine besylate is specifically intended to improve the function of the cardiovascular system, side effects may occur. Reports from the Mayo Clinic state that amlodipine besylate side effects may cause irregular heartbeat and/or pounding heart and chest pain, but these side effects are rare. Bruising and bleeding as well as swelling in the extremities are other side effects that may be experienced when taking amlodipine besylate although these do not occur frequently. Contact your doctor if you experience any side effects or you have concerns when taking this medication.

Amlodipine besylate side effects may cause harm to the gastrointestinal tract. The GI tract has calcium channels within the lining of the intestines and stomach. If these receptors change in any way, then side effects may appear which can include loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, weight changes, vomiting and symptoms of dry mouth. Always follow the instructions carefully when taking any prescribed medication. Amlodipine (Norvasc, Pfizer, and generics) (as besylate, mesylate or maleate) is a long-acting calcium channel blocker (dihydropyridine (DHP) class) used as an anti-hypertensive and in the treatment of angina. Like other calcium channel blockers, amlodipine acts by relaxing the smooth muscle in the arterial wall, decreasing total peripheral resistance and hence reducing blood pressure. Iin angina it increases blood flow to the heart muscle (although DHP-class calcium channel blockers are more selective for arteries than myocardium, as the cardiac calcium channels are not of the dihydropyridine-type).
