Yeast Infection Treatments - Oral versus Topical Therapies

Yeast infections are a type of fungus infection caused by Candida albicans. Yeast are normally found on the skin and in moist areas such as the vagina and mouth. When your system becomes out of balance due to illness, diabetes, medications, birth control or antibiotics, yeast can proliferate and take over. It is believed that 90% of the U.S. population is affected due to the over administration of antibiotics. Both men and women can have yeast infections as well as children. In babies it is known as thrush. In women it is generally localized to the vaginal and vulvar areas. There are many yeast infection treatments that range from prescriptions, to over-the-counter (OTC) medications to home remedies.

Conventional Remedies Yeast infection treatments conventionally involve the use of antifungal creams or gels that are applied topically in the vaginal area as well as oral antifungal pills. If more than one infection is present, this may call for a combination of medications to cover all bases. Typical topical antifungal creams include: clotrimazole (Lotrimin), butoconazole (Femstat 3) and miconazole (Monistat). Some of these are currently available over-the-counter. Some are touted to work within 3 days. If this is the first time you have had an infection, do not self diagnose. You need to go to the doctor to get a proper diagnosis. Bacterial and/or protozoan infections can be deadly and are transmissible. Yeast infection treatments are also available in vaginal tablet form for example nystatin (Mycostatin), miconazole (Monistat), clotrimazole (Lotrimin) and terconazole (Terazol). Oral yeast infection treatments are available as Diflucan (fluconazole). It should be noted that healthcare professionals prefer yeast infection treatments that are in the form of vaginal tablets or creams/gels as opposed to oral medications. Oral yeast infection treatments have side effects and can wreak havoc on the body. Vaginal tablets and suppositories have a local effect only without systemic adverse effects.

Home Remedies

There are five well known home remedies for yeast infection treatments that are tried and true if you prefer to stay away from pharmaceuticals. These include yogurt, tea tree oil, garlic, vinegar, coconut oil and cinnamon oil.

The yogurt remedy involves making use of a tampon as a carrier of the yogurt. Simply dip a tampon into plain yogurt and insert into the vagina. You want to do this twice a day until symptoms go away. Make sure you don’t have a bacterial infection as the yogurt will feed the bacteria and cause them to proliferate. You need to know you have a yeast infection with this home remedy. Tea tree oil is another home remedy that makes use of the tampon as a vehicle. A few drops of this antiseptic/antifungal oil works wonders. Make sure to dilute the oil with some olive oil. It may be to strong for this sensitive area.

Yeast infection symptoms can also be relieved with garlic. Garlic is actually meant to be used on skin and not the vagina. You should use fresh garlic however garlic oil works well but should be diluted with vitamin E oil and a few drops of coconut oil. Simply apply freshly pressed garlic juice or the 3 oil concoction directly to skin that is infected. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, garlic inhibits yeast growth and coconut oil contains fatty acids to keep the infection from spreading and aids skin in the healing process Coconut oil and cinnamon oil have antifungal properties and can be applied to skin directly several times a day.

Last but but not least is vinegar. Vinegar is the natural stand by. Most everyone has vinegar in the home. This can be applied to the skin and vaginal area. Vinegar relieves itching and burning and stops yeast from growing. It also helps to restore the proper pH to the infected area. Vinegar can be added to douche water (1 capfull) and 1 cup of vinegar can be added to bath water. You can use apple cider vinegar or regular white vinegar. Whatever you have will do.
