If you are an athlete or someone who is a body builder, you’re probably worried about maintaining and building muscle tissue. As with most athletes, some form of supplementation is taken to build lean body mass. One easy way to boost your protein intake is by taking whey. Europeans have used whey for hundreds of years to build strong lean bodies. Whey has been well researched in modern times and it has been demonstrated to be beneficial to anyone who has high protein requirements. However, there are whey protein dangers if taken in excess.

Whey is a liquid that is a byproduct of making cheese. This semitransparent liquid is packed with protein. Whey’s proteins are of a highly branched form making it an excellent source of amino acids and in fact contains all the essential amino acids which makes it a complete protein source and it doesn’t have to be chewed. Basically it comes in two forms: powder or liquid.

Lactose intolerant individuals beware of whey protein dangers. Liquid whey generally contains 75 percent lactose and if the protein has been isolated from the liquid, the whey contains 0.5 percent lactose. If you are lactose intolerant, you might want to stay away from the liquid form to prevent an allergic response.

Beyond building muscle tissue, whey has been used for its weight loss ability. Whey has no fat and if the proteins have been separated from the liquid, contains essentially no carbohydrates. This is great for a low carb low fat diet. Supplementation with whey is an easy and inexpensive way of getting all the protein you need without the calories and the benefits of whey come from the very first time you take it. A positive side effect of taking whey is that it stabilizes blood sugar levels effectively lowering insulin levels and that in turn lowers your fat storing capability. So, whey helps you to burn fat while being able to build lean muscle at the same time.

Whey goes another step forward and promotes cardiovascular health. The amino acids from whey are directly absorbed into heart muscle providing the building blocks to make heart proteins necessary for contraction. Take a little whey and some fish oil and your good to go. But, be careful of the whey protein dangers and don’t overdo it.

Whey proteins have also found to be beneficial in cancer patients. When you consider the cellular destruction from chemotherapy and radiation treatments, whey is a welcome supplement. A lot of protein is required to repair the damage of these therapies. Cancer patients are often nauseated so it is difficult for them to eat anything solid not to mention they have no appetite. Whey comes to the rescue again. Either as a liquid that is easily swallowed or capsule it goes down easily. And, whey is quickly absorbed and used by the body.

Although whey has a number of nutritional benefits there are whey protein dangers. Anything done in moderation is fine however, excess can be dangerous. High protein intake has been demonstrated to cause kidney failure. This has been clearly demonstrated in diabetic patients. Since they couldn’t handle sugar, physicians put them on a high protein diet. That didn’t work. Taking in a lot of protein causes the kidneys to work hard and go into hyper-filtration causing damage to the filtration system. Damage is also done to liver with a high protein intake. Protein can build up in the liver causing harm. Normally protein that we take in is converted in the liver to urea and other toxins. This in turn is removed as urine by way of the kidneys. Either way, damage is done to both the liver and kidneys. Excess amino acids in the blood causes the pH of blood to become more acidic. The pH of blood is critical in maintaining overall health and it should be slightly basic. To much protein brings you into a state of acidosis which is a sign of illness and is often seen in cancer patients.

To avoid whey protein dangers, consult with your healthcare provider about the proper diet for you and how much protein is safe to take in on a daily basis. Just because whey is a natural product doesn’t mean it can’t do harm. Your doctor can run blood tests if necessary to make sure everything is okay.
