Weight loss foods

You don’t have to eat unhealthy food to eat tasty food!

Hearing that someone is trying to lose weight often means an automatic assumption that they are depriving themselves and eating plain, boring foods which would fail to tempt anybody’s taste buds. This is not necessarily always the case – it is possible to create exciting, great tasting, healthy dishes that will encourage weight loss and prevent the boredom that often happens when eating so-called diet foods every day.

It’s not really about denial

Many times when we decide to lose weight the inclination is to begin a strict regime of self-denial and excluding our favourite foods from our eating plan. We convince ourselves that, in the interests of weight loss, it will be easy to eat nothing but salad and plain chicken or fish. However, this approach nearly always results in failure. Denying ourselves the foods we love and enjoy is a sure way to fall off the diet wagon and binge on the foods we feel we are being deprived of.

There really is no such thing as weight loss foods – the best approach to losing weight and successfully keeping it off is to eat the foods we love and enjoy but just eat less of them! Moderation in all things is an oft-repeated phrase, which is actually very sensible advice. Feeling satisfied by what we eat is a great incentive to keep to the meal plan.

Variety is the spice of life

A healthy, well balanced diet is one that includes a wide variety of foods – sticking to the same old thing day after day just because it is good for you will only lead to boredom and failure. It is essential for health, energy and strength that you include a variety of foods from every food group in your diet, remembering that any food, in moderation, can be considered a weight loss food.

Carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy diet, complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole-wheat pasta; whole meal breads, some vegetables etc. are useful weight loss foods as they create a feeling of fullness and are long lasting sources of energy for the body.

Proteins are essential for health and vitality. Good quality, low-fat protein is an essential part of our diet and there are many varieties to choose from any of which may be considered to be weight loss foods.

  • Lean chicken or turkey

  • Fish – any kind is great but especially oily fish.

  • Eggs

  • Lean red meat

  • Protein shakes

  • Soy protein Fruit and vegetables

When trying to lose weight by eating a healthy, well balanced diet the inclusion of as many fruit and vegetables as possible is a great way to create variety.

Great combinations

With a little bit of time and effort it is easy to create great tasting, healthy meals which will satisfy and fill you as well as contribute to your weight loss efforts.

A great example of what you can do at home is to combine lean red meat with pulses and vegetables to make great soup, stew or chilli that will fill you up for hours.

Super weight loss foods

Some studies show that certain foods behave in a way that promotes weight loss; the way these super foods are prepared, cooked and eaten may increase or reduce their nutritional benefits.

  • Black tea, with a squeeze of lemon if necessary, is more beneficial than tea with milk.

  • Steam vegetables rather than boil them

  • Eat apples with the skin on

  • Choose dark chocolate with almonds for a treat

  • Black beans – almost a perfect super food containing fat burning carbohydrates, soluble and insoluble fibres and protein.

  • Cauliflower – has high vitamin C content and is thought to be anti-carcinogenic.

  • Coffee – shown to help prevent insulin resistance

  • Cinnamon – helps to control blood glucose levels and prevent insulin spikes

By not excluding your favourite foods but rather making a few changes to your diet you can see that losing weight should be an enjoyable experience.
