Your body as evolved to burn food sources in a particular order. Your body burns sugar/carbohydrates first. When it runs out of sugars it burns fat. When fat runs out your body burns protein to make energy in the form of ATP. ATP is the energy currency of the cell that runs most of your metabolic pathways. If you take in too much sugar/carbohydrates, more than you need, the body converts this into fat and stores it as fat. You already have fat coming in your diet so you don’t need to add to this. Exercise can help with burning both carbs/sugars and fat to maintain a normal weight. Eating properly will help as well. The proper exercise and eating habits will speed up your metabolism. Once you reach a happy medium, you should be on your way to easily maintaining a healthy weight for a long time to come.

At first, trying to set up a new lifestyle can be difficult so you need to get motivated. This is the difficult part, getting started. You need to get psyched out and get it done. Whether you talk to yourself or perhaps make use of hypnosis, do something that works for you. Some people put up notes that are easily seen around the house to remind them and encourage them to make changes. This article is not concerned about specific exercises and specific foods that will speed up your metabolism but rather to become aware of the calories you are taking in based on the foods you are eating. Become aware of what you are doing instead of eating reflexively. Take an active interest and then become proactive. Learn how to take charge.

Most people are unaware of the amount of food they are taking in. Are you eating a huge bowl of cereal for breakfast? You’re only supposed to have a half of a cup. Do you know how small that is? Do you fill your glass, plate or bowl to the rim? (are you being greedy). Containers should be filled about 2/3 or 3/4 full. Do you super size the container by using a tumbler versus an 8 ounce glass? You’re probably eating at fast food places too often. Forget that.

Concentrate on eating small portions and eating often and make sure the meal is balanced. You want lean meats and veggies. Whole grains are good and you can have a small portion of rice or potatoes. Cut back on butter and saturated fats. Add some spice and herbs to your life for flavor. Spices and herbs are known to speed up your metabolism so eat a lot of them. Drink green tea instead of coffee as it has powerful antioxidants that will increase your metabolic rate.

Keep in mind that the timing of your meals is crucial, drinking plenty of water and/or green tea and getting a good night’s sleep will increase your metabolic rate. Eat well in the morning and decrease the amount you take in as the day progresses. Do not eat before you go to bed.
