The HCG diet and muscle relaxers
Both the HCG diet and muscle relaxers are used by people with the intention of losing weight and when used together can cause some serious side effects.
The HCG diet
The HCG diet is based around the principles of taking hormones and dramatically reducing calorie intake. The diet is full of claims of fast weight loss and promises that participants of the diet will lose between one and two pounds per day. This may sound like a tempting thing to try but the truth is diets such as this can cause more damage than good to the health of individual. Dieting in this fashion and taking muscle relaxers put people at risk of health problems as they can both have some serious side effects.
The HCG diet, which was developed in 1954 by the British Dr. Simeons is focused around daily injections of hormone. The hormone is the same one that is produced during pregnancy and is known in full as human chorionic gonadotropin or for short as HCG. HCG is used for medical purposes in individuals who have a deficiency of the hormone and require injections to boost their natural levels. In these people studies have shown that when injected with the hormone fat levels decrease and muscle mass increases. These results are what Simeon has based his diet on as he believes that these effects of the HCG will be the same in healthy individuals. Simeon has claimed that the HCG diet work successfully to reduce fat located on the hips, stomach and thighs. However an additionally part of the diet is an extremely low calorie intake whereby the individual is restricted to 500 calories per day. He goes on to claim that those taking part in the study do not feel hungry or unhappy despite the lack of calories.
There have been a number of studies looking further into the effectiveness of the diet since it was first developed. In a controlled study in which one group was given a placebo whilst others were injected with HCG, and both had a restricted calorie intake, the results were the same for both groups. This suggests that the HCG is not having any effect but rather the individual are losing weight due to the extremely low calorie intake. Despite these results people continue to believe that HCG is affected and is in fact currently a booming market.
There are a number of side effects of the HCG diet some of which due to the hormone itself and other due to the low calorie consumption. Some of them include blood clots, headaches, fatigue, depression and muscle pain.
Muscle relaxers are generally used to relieve symptoms of painful muscles but are at times used at the same time as HCG. Individually both the hormone and muscle relaxers have potential side effects but when used in combination can cause more serious complications. Muscle relaxers can increase drowsiness, fatigue and dizziness. You should not drive or operate heavy machinery whilst taking muscle relaxers, especially when combined with HCG. Ultimately there are better and healthier ways to lose weight.
