The Early Signs of Pregnancy

The symptoms of pregnancy usually differ from one woman to the next, but the early signs of pregnancy are usually the same. Understanding these signs would therefore be incredibly important since each one might be related to things outside of pregnancy. Keep in mind, though, that although some women might experience early signs of pregnancy after just a week from conception, others might not experience them until several weeks later. Here are some of the signs to watch out for.

Spotting

Spotting is one of the early signs of pregnancy and usually occurs around six to twelve days after conception when the embryo attaches itself to the uterus. Some women have also reported cramps during this time. Other explanations of this sign would include:

  • Menstruation
  • Menstrual changes
  • Birth control changes
  • Abrasion from sexual intercourse
  • Infection

Menstrual Changes

Delayed periods and missed periods are very common early signs of pregnancy and are usually the reasons behind pregnancy tests, in general.

Other explanations of this sign would include:

  • Excessive weight loss or weight gain
  • Hormonal problems
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Tension
  • Breastfeeding
  • Illness

Tender Breasts

This sign usually starts a couple of weeks after conception and some women also notice other changes, like swollen or sore breasts. Other explanations of this sign would include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Impending menstruation
  • Birth control pills

Fatigue

This sign can also begin during the first seven days after conception.

Other explanations of this sign would include:

  • Exhaustion
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Flu or common cold
  • Other illnesses

Nausea

More commonly known as morning sickness during pregnancy, nausea may occur between two to eight weeks after conception. Although some women are lucky enough not to experience it at all, others might feel nauseous all day long. Other explanations of this sign would include:

  • Stress
  • Food poisoning
  • Birth control changes
  • Stomach disorders

Darker Areolas

The skin around a pregnant woman’s nipples usually get darker during the pregnancy. Other explanations of this sign would include:

  • Hormonal imbalances that aren’t related to pregnancy
  • Leftover effects from previous pregnancies

Back Pain

Pain in the lower back is another one of the early signs of pregnancy, though it usually lasts much longer than that. Other explanations of this sign would include:

  • Impending menstruation
  • Mental or physical strains
  • Stress
  • Other back problems
