Reactive Depression: A Common Mental Ailment

Being or feeling depressed is a very common emotion for the general population. Reactive depression needs to be treated before it can drastically interfere with a person’s quality of life.

Depression is an encompassing term that describes a list of conditions which all affect a person’s emotional state. The prevalence of these psychiatric illnesses is rising on a daily basis. Unlike other forms of depression, reactive depression has a direct cause. People react differently to the condition depending on their own experiences and the particular circumstances surrounding their situation. Some individuals may recover from it rather quickly while others may be pulled down into another form of chronic depression.

Reactive depression is normally a direct response to a troubling event or situation. The severity of the condition depends solely on the person being affected. The same event can cause a variety of responses from different people. In general, there are some common triggers for reactive depression which include:

  • Death of a loved one

  • Marital issues

  • Changing jobs

  • Redundancy in one’s life

  • Retirement

  • Problem relationships between children and family

  • Any other major life change such as changing residences

It is important to note what may have caused the depression because it can help with treatment and support. When left untreated, people can exhibit a wide range of symptoms such as sleep difficulties, decrease in appetite, moodiness, lack of caring, and thoughts of suicide.

Treating Reactive Depression

Treatment is centered on helping people cope with whatever situation triggered the reactive depression. While the initial feelings of depression can be very severe, they will often fade as time passes. This means that one person may be alright in a week while someone else may still be having issues a month later. There are a few things which can help a person recover:

  • A strong support system can help considerably with the amount of time it takes a person to feel normal again.

  • Being healthy- The mind works better when the body has adequate nutrition.

  • Development of coping skills throughout one’s life- The ability to apply coping strategies learned over the past will allow a person to quickly adapt to change.

  • Counseling- Talking through the even can often be a good way to get rid of negative emotions.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy

  • The use of self help resources for depression

  • Medications- Prescriptions are often given in severe situations where other solutions may not be having an adequate effect.

Some of the symptoms of depression may be treated directly which can also help a person feel better. Sleeping medications and nutrient supplements can help with some of the common problems so that a person does not become physically ill as well. If feelings of depression continue to get worse over time or show no improvement, it is important to visit your healthcare professional.
