Pulse Rate Chart

An indication of good health is a pulse rate which reads as normal. The rate of the pulse or heartbeat is very effective health indicator and this can be checked by using a pulse rate chart.

The definition of the pulse is the rate which the heart beats over a one minute period. Blood is pumped into the body via the heart. And blood vessels which are near the neck, upper arm and wrist begin to pulsate and throb. The normal pulse rate for most people is 60 to 100 beats per minute. Particular medical conditions, e.g. cardiac arrhythmia, can have an effect on a pulse rate which is normal. Other factors which influence the pulse rate are level of fitness, gender and age. The pulse rate of a young child is considerably higher. It is round about 110 beats per minute (BPM). This figure is close to a pulse of an adult after they have taken part in exercise. Females who are 12 years of age and above usually have quicker heart rates than males. The heart rate of athletes may be around 40 BPM if they take part in lots of cardiovascular conditioning. The pulse rate lowers when resting and is increased when taking part in vigorous exercise. Using a pulse rate chart is useful to monitor the pulse.

Calculating the Pulse Rate

To check pulse rate, place the tip of the index, second and third fingers on the palm side of the other wrist or check on your lower neck at either side of the windpipe. Count the beats for 10 seconds and then multiply this number by six. By doing this the pulse rate is measured and the figures can be compared with the pulse rate chart.

Resting Pulse Rate

This is the amount of time the heart beats while in complete rest. In the medical field this is referred to as resting heart rate. The lower resting heart rates are indications of having a heart which is healthy. This resting pulse rate can be calculated by sitting for 10 minutes quietly. Place the tip of the index, middle or ring finger on the radial artery. It can also be carried out by placing the finger on the brachial artery which is at the inner side of the elbow or the posterior tibial artery which is near the joint of the ankle. Or place the finger on the popliteal artery which is placed behind the knee.

Healthy Heart Rate when Exercising

‘Target heart rate’ is a term referring to the rate which blood must be pumped by the heart when taking part in a work out in order for the body to achieve the maximum benefits from the workout. The target heart rate should be around 60-85% of the maximum heart rate. The risk of cardiovascular and orthopedic problems is raised if after taking part in vigorous exercise the heart rate is above 85%. Vigorous and strenuous exercises raise the pulse rate so it is important to check with the doctor before beginning an exercise program.

By looking at the pulse rate chart it is possible to check if the pulse rate is normal or not. A normal pulse rate is an indicator of good health and an irregular pulse rate could be an indication of a heart which is not performing as it should.
