Pelvic Floor Exercises Can Pep Up Your Sex Life

Everyone knows that exercising your body is good for you and that if you want a washboard stomach then you have to strengthen the muscles with exercise every day. Did you know too that you have vaginal muscles and these too benefit from some attention!

Your vagina

The vagina is what connects the womb and the cervix to the outer body and it is placed between the anus and the urethra, which is where we urinate from. The vagina is a muscular tube which stretches to allow sexual intercourse and childbirth. The blood from a woman’s period also flows through the vagina.

Kegel muscles

Kegel muscles are those that are wrapped around your vagina and anus, they strengthen the pelvic floor muscles which support the bladder, rectum, vagina and uterus.

A strong Pelvic floor:

  • Strengthens the vaginal muscles

  • Stops urine leaks when coughing or sneezing

  • Stops the womb or the rectum from prolapsing

  • Controls bladder and bowel function

  • Increases sexual arousal and response

Exercising your pelvic floor muscles

Kegal exercises can be done anywhere, lying on the bed, sitting in a chair, even waiting for bus! There are a few rules to follow, but these are very simple:

  • Make sure you bladder is empty

  • Squeeze your vaginal muscles by imagining you want to stop the flow in the middle of a pee.

  • Begin by squeezing the muscles slowly count to 10 and then let go and slowly count to ten again. Do 5 sets

  • Squeeze for 1 second, stop for 1 second. Do 5 sets

  • Gradually build up to 10 sets of each exercise

This slow and then quick method builds up the pelvic floor strength very quickly, especially if you do them every day. You can also try squeezing your vaginal muscles during intercourse and your partner will love it!

Other solutions

There are also kegel weights on the market, which you can buy from chemist’s or health food shops. You place a weight inside your vagina and keep it there for a certain amount of time, gradually increasing the weight as your muscles get stronger. However, unless you are extremely confident about keeping the weight inside yourself, this method can only be used at home.

Kegel exercises are an important part of a woman’s sexual health and this area shouldn’t be ignored.
