Moringa Oleifera and its health benefits

In the last few years moringa oleifera has started to become more and more well known and growth of the plant is being encouraged, not only for its nutritional health benefits but also for the financial opportunities that it creates. The nutritional benefits of moringa oleifera are in abundance. It is a great source of a number of vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, calcium, protein and iron. Studies were conducted into the exact amounts of these nutrients that the moringa oleifera leaves contain by the Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. Some of the results that were produced included the fact that within 100 grams of the leaves there was 2009 mg of calcium. In order to consume this much calcium, one would have to drink more than six glasses of milk. Iron was also found to be in particularly high quantities and in 100 grams of moringa oleifera leaves; there was 28 mg of iron. This is roughly the same as eating 7 oz. of chicken liver or 9 oz. of been tenderloin.
The great thing about the moringa oleifera plant is that every part of it can be used in some way. As well as being nutritionally beneficial when consumed the plant can also be used in medicines. Water based or alcoholic extracts can be taken from the plants and used to make medicines including creams, moisturizers, oils, powders or ointments. Health conditions that are thought to be improved with help of the plant include rheumatism, joint pain, headaches and additionally for the treatment of wounds. This plant, whilst not so well known in the western world has long been used within the Indian medical system most often for its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
