Lose weight thanks to the low calories in grapefruit

The grapefruit diet is one of the oldest known diets and is thought to have been around since the 1930’s. It remains to be a popular diet that has been spread through word of mouth, in books and online. Over the years it also been referred to as the Hollywood diet and the mayo diet. The theory behind the grapefruit diet is not only that the calories in grapefruit are minimal but also that it contains an ingredient that when combined with protein supposedly triggers fat burning therefore weight loss. The problem is that the fat is mostly taken from fluids rather than stored body fat so any weight loss returns once the dieter finished the diet. It is thought that the Atkins diet may have been loosely based on the low calories in grapefruit diet as it also is based around high protein, low calorie and low carbohydrates. The diet claims that it is possible to lose 10 pounds within the 12 days of dieting. For those who want to continue to diet for longer, they must take two days without dieting before starting again. Exercise is recommended in some versions of the diet but not all of them. Some people say that the low calories in grapefruit make exercise a bad idea as the body simply is getting enough energy to cope with exercise.

However the people in this study had also begun modest physical activity, which may be another reason for the weight loss.

Is a grapefruit a fat burner?

There is no doubt that grapefruit is a very nutritious and low calorie fruit, containing high levels of vitamin C and fibre. However it is probably not he magical fat burner that it has been made out to be in the past. One positive effect that it may have is to help dieters to feel full quicker due to its ability to reduce insulin levels in the body, which tell us that we are hungry. This is generally the opinion of nutritional experts.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with grapefruits, the low calories in grapefruit diets does have some cause for concern. The diet is very restricted and encourages small portions; this means that dieters are not providing their bodies with many of the essential vitamins and minerals that the body requires to properly function. Not only this but the diet quickly becomes incredibly boring making it hard for dieters to stick to for the full amount of time. Generally the consensus on the grapefruit diet is not to bother. There are plenty of much more effective, healthier and safer diets out there, which will do much more for you than this one will.
