Know your Proteins for Optimizing Your Health

Articles tend to spend a lot of time on information about carbohydrates and fats but what about proteins. Not all protein is created equal.

Everyone seems to be so concerned about their carbohydrate and fat intake these days that we are all forgetting about protein. Protein is no less important. It’s important to keep in mind that all protein is not created equal so you need to know the best protein sources. Just as there are good and bad carbohydrates and fats, there are good and bad proteins. For those of you who are vegetarian or vegan it is possible to survive without meat protein as many vegetable sources contain protein and in particular legumes however you will need to supplement with B vitamins. The best source of B vitamins comes from meat and fish. B vitamins are essential enzymatic cofactors that run your metabolic pathways. You just can’t live without them. Our next step is to take a look at the best protein sources.

Best Sources of Protein

  • Believe it or not grass feed beef and not grain fed beef is best protein source. This is important!

    Grass fed beef contains omega-3 fatty acids and a number of other nutrients that are not found in in grain fed beef. The nice thing about grass fed beef is that are raised under more humane conditions. Buying grass fed beef is not a problem today. Most grocery stores have it. If you don’t have stores close to you that supply grass fed beef, you can order over the Internet. This is a best protein source for health benefits.

  • Buy organic free range chicken and not caged chicken. Organic free range chickens contain omega-3 fatty acids and a whole host of other nutrients as well. It’s good to know that organic free range chicken has a wonderful flavor. This is true of organic free range egg layers. They lay the best eggs. These eggs also contain omega-3 fatty acids, more vitamin E and less cholesterol. Organic chickens and eggs are a best protein source.

  • Buy wild salmon and not farmed salmon or any farmed fish for that matter. Wild salmon contains more omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients as well.

  • Buy fresh tuna, mackerel and catfish and forgo frozen fish sticks. Fresh seafoods have not been processed and battered . Only fresh seafood will have high protein concentration and omega-3 fatty acids. Fresh and wild seafood is a best protein source.

You’ll notice that these best protein sources also contain omega-3 fatty acids. Whoa, what an added benefit. Here in the U.S. we don’t get enough oily fishes in our diet. We’re just not used to the strong fishy flavor. We find it offensive. However, notice that you can actually get omega-3 fatty acids in chicken and beef when it is organically grown. What were the growers of beef and chicken thinking by feeding them cheap food and housing them in a large concrete floored enclosures. We don’t need to eat more meat to get the protein we need we need to eat a best protein source. Which, turns out to be organic free range.
