How to Treat Diverticular Disease from Home

What is Diverticulosis?

In a nutshell, diverticular disease refers to a condition, wherein small pouches develop inside the colon because the large intestine’s inner lining is forced through weaker spots outside of the colon. Although there is no set cause as to why diverticulosis occurs, a lack of exercise and a low fiber diet is known to put people at higher risk. Diverticulitis may range from mild to extreme infections that may require surgery and hospitalization.

What are the Symptoms?

Although diverticulosis doesn’t usually cause symptoms and the majority of people don’t actually know that they have a diverticular disease until it shows up on a colonoscopy, some of these symptoms may occur sometimes:

  • Abdominal cramps, especially on the left side

  • Gas,

    bloating and belching

  • Nausea

  • Fever Bloody stools Constipation, diarrhea, or thin stools

  • General feelings of fatigue or exhaustion.

How Can It be Treated from Home?

Here are some home remedies that you can turn to whenever you have digestive problems. The good news is that you probably already have most of these things in your kitchen by now. You can look for the following in your kitchen cupboard: Barley Brown rice Garlic Barley is an anti-inflammatory digestive grain that can be added to vegetable stews or soups. Brown rice, on the other hand, is easy on digestion and rich in fiber. It can also calm down spasms and inflammation inside the colon. Conversely, garlic can help prevent infections, in general. And you can look for the following in your refrigerator:

  • Papaya

  • Pears

  • Potatoes

Papaya and pears can both soothe a diverticular disease anytime, and the good news is that they don’t need doctoring to eat. Papaya does have quite an unusual flavor, though, so you might want to sweeten it a little bit first. As for potatoes, they are both nourishing and tasty, and they have calming anti-inflammatory properties that are great for digestion, too.

Other Tips to Keep in Mind

1. Exercise. Everything inside the body will work better if you exercise – and that includes your overall digestion.

2. Avoid Caffeine. Caffeine can generally cause digestive problems.

3. Take Your Time. Since your bowels take time to move, it only makes sense that you should give it enough time to do so.

4. Consume less red meat. Red meat can weaken the colon’s walls and thus cause a diverticular disease.
