Most of us understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It helps improve your overall quality of life for a prolonged period of time, and also helps avoid chronic conditions including diabetes and heart disease.

Small changes in your everyday activities can promote healthy living. Your approach, determination and attitude are the key factors in achieving a great lifestyle.

Exercise

Regular exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, five times a week is an important aspect of healthy living. However, most Americans find it difficult to exercise due to lack of time. Adding little physical activity everyday can lower your risk heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It can improve joint stability and flexibility, maintain bone mass, enhance self-esteem and reduce stress. It can also lead to almost 10 percent reduction in your weight, and improve your longevity.

Simple Exercises

You do not require complex equipment and trainer to exercise. You can achieve your healthy living goals by simply turning off the television. Park your car further away from the store and walk a little more. Use the steps instead of the elevator, if possible. Everyday chores such as gardening and snow shoveling can also contribute to healthy living. List all the physical activity you performed during the day, and go for an extra walk if you feel you have spent too much time at the work desk.

Eating Well

Healthy and balanced diet is also important for healthy living. Your meals should include at least five servings of fruits and vegetables along with whole grains and lean proteins. Controlling the amount of food you eat is crucial for maintaining or losing weight. Low-fat dairy is also a great choice. Determine the number of calories you need, depending on your lifestyle and age. Most experts also believe that eating five to six small meals is better than eating the three traditional big meals during breakfast, lunch and dinner. You should also pick three common foods that you eat during the day, and find healthy, low-calorie substitutes for them. This will make your meals healthier without compromising on your taste and flavor.

Remember that healthy living may demand some changes in your lifestyle. These changes should be introduced slowly over a period of time. Sudden weight loss or excessive physical activity may not be good for your body as well. The key is to balance everything you consume or do in our lives.
