Grapefruit Juice Diet

The Grapefruit Diet has been in use since the 1930s. It is based on the premise that grapefruit contains ingredients, which help burn fat and thereby, trigger weight loss. Unfortunately, the opponents claim that the weight loss is from fluids not from fat.

Components of the Diet

Most versions of the Grapefruit Diet include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and some milk and snack at the bedtime. It encourages dieters to drink plenty of water and black coffee during the day. Along with protein-rich foods such as eggs, meat, fish and dairy, individuals following this diet plan should consume ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice during each meal. However, you are not allowed to consume any snack in between the meals.

How It Works

This low-carbohydrate, moderate-protein diet averages 800-1,000 calories in most versions. While most people would lose weight due to the low-calorie intake, there are no scientific studies to explain the role of grapefruit enzymes in burning fat. Some researchers believe that the low glycemic index and high fiber content of grapefruit lowers insulin levels in the body, and thereby promotes weight loss.

Benefits

Grapefruit diet plan promises that you will lose 10 pounds in 12 days without feeling hungry or uncomfortable. It also allows you to have three meals per day, and an additional meal before sleep. You also have the option of eating the fruit or drinking the unsweetened juice. The diet helps burn excessive fat in the body, and lowers insulin levels. The diet plan does not limit the amount of food you eat. In fact, you can eat until you feel completely stuffed up. However, the rules of the diet are very strict and it is important to follow them completely.

Disadvantages

While some individuals benefit immensely from grapefruit diet plan, others may find numerous pitfalls in it. It offers a limited variety of foods, which may get boring after a few days, and the dieters may suffer from taste fatigue. The limited variety of foods may lack certain essential nutrients, and prevent you from getting a complete, nutritious meal. This may lower your immunity and increase your risk of infections. Some experts do not consider this plan to be healthy as you may lose fluid from your body instead of fat.

Grapefruit diet plan may give you some drastic results. However, a healthy balanced diet along with exercise is the best way of losing weight and maintaining it.
