Effective Nasal Congestion Remedies

Nasal congestion, although not often serious is a very irritating and uncomfortable problem that can affect children and adults a like. It most often occurs accompanying a cold, flu or allergy and is due to blood vessels and sinus cavities in the nose becoming inflamed or blocked with mucus. This results in difficult breathing and can be dangerous in young children. Further symptoms that often arise due to nasal congestion include headaches, earaches and a fever.

Steaming

Nasal congestion can also be caused through breathing in excessive amounts of polluted air so spending time in areas that have filtered air providing you with plenty of clean and pure air can be one of the most effective natural nasal congestion remedies, which can help to prevent becoming sick. Steaming is another of the very popular and effective nasal congestion remedies. Breathe in the steam given off by a bowl of hot water whilst covering your head with a towel to keep the steam in. Add a drop of vinegar or eucalyptus oil for best results. There are also vaporisers that have a similar effect but use cold water, which are better suited for children so that they don’t burn their face with the hot steam.

Spicy Food

Eating spicy food is considered to be another of the effective nasal congestion remedies using natural spices such as black pepper to clear the sinuses. Some people believe that drinking water that has had baking soda mixed in works, while others swear by eating horseradish dipped in honey, being sure to inhale deeply as you eat! Drinking hot tea such as basil tea has been a popular remedy for a long time and placing a peeled clove of garlic in the nostril and inhaling it for 10 to 15 minutes has also been recommended. Natural nasal congestion remedies have the strong advantage of not causing any side effects, although the effectiveness of some of them is up for debate.

See the doctor

If the nasal congestions mentioned above fail to work for you after a period of time, it would be a good idea to see a doctor. Corticosteroids may be prescribed by your doctor, which contain an anti-inflammatory and should help to relax the blood vessels, relieving the blockage. This kind of treatment has been known to cause side effects so be sure to follow the guidelines the doctor provides and ask if you have any questions.

Sleep with an extra pillow

Sleeping with an extra pillow under the head can provide additional comfort and help to make breathing easier at night time. Medical professionals also recommend using a saline solution to flush out the nasal cavities throughout the day. To do this, mix salt into boiled water and wait for it to cool down to a comfortable temperature. Use a dropper to add some of the solution to one nostril at a time, waiting for it to reach the back of the throat before blowing it out again. Repeat the process with the other nostril.
