Dukan Diet Plan - What Can You Eat?

The Dukan Diet plan first came out a decade ago when a French doctor named Pierre Dukan created it to treat people who were obese. In today’s day and age, however, the Dukan Diet plan is used to lose and maintain weight in a healthy manner. In a nutshell, it has four stages that are filled with low-calorie and high-protein foods. Counting calories and weighing foods aren’t part of this diet plan. Basically, you can eat however much you want anytime that you want – provided that you start out eating lean protein, that is.

The Four Stages of the Diet

1. Attack.

This stage of the Dukan Diet plan is very simple. You can basically eat as much lean protein as you want, along with 1.5 liters of water and 1.5 tablespoons of oat bran every day. Yes, it’s as simple as that. Aside from that, you can choose from 72 different low-fat or lean meats – lamb and pork not included – fish, eggs, non-fat dairy, poultry and soya.

2. Cruise.

In this stage, you can start eating an unlimited amount of the 28 non-starchy vegetables, but you can only do this every other day and only if you consume a lot of low-fat or lean protein and 2 tablespoons of oat bran with them. Here are some of the vegetables that aren’t part of this stage, though:

  • Carrots

  • Potatoes

  • Sweetcorn

  • Peas

3. Consolidation.

In this stage, you can eat as much protein and vegetables as you want every day, including lamb and pork. You can also eat a piece of low-sugar fruit, some hard cheese and two granary bread slices. If you want, you can also have a serving of starchy foods and a “celebration” meal every week while in this stage. However, you will have to completely commit yourself to the Dukan Diet plan from here on out.

4. Stabilization.

This part of the plan focuses on maintaining your weight. Basically, you can eat anything that you want, as long as you do not regain the weight that you have already worked so hard to lose. Ideally, you should follow the all-protein diet of stage 1 once a week, eat 3 tablespoons of oat bran every day and take a half-hour walk every day. You should avoid escalators and elevators like the plague, as well. Lastly, although you are allowed to eat spices, vinegars, sugar-free gum and artificial sweeteners while following the Dukan Diet plan, it would also be highly advisable to take multivitamin tablets with minerals every day.
