Beneficial Vitamins for Healthier Skin

Let’s start with a Trivial Pursuit type of question. What’s that largest organ of the human body? It’s the skin and it’s the biggest no matter how you measure it. It’s the largest area, it’s the heaviest and it is responsible for about 15% of your weight.

It also endures hot sunny days, cold winter mornings, hard work and harsh environments, so it should not be mistreated. In order to ensure that the skin remains healthy some simple things must happen. First of all the body must get enough vitamins and minerals, then it’s better to keep out of direct sunlight.

Vitamins and minerals should be present in your diet in sufficient qualities. This enables the skin to regenerate and repair itself. The vitamins and minerals that healthy skin requires are vitamin A, B, D, E and K. Minerals which are beneficial include selenium, copper, zinc and antioxidants.

Vitamin A encourages the skin cells to develop normally and enhances normal growth. Additionally it has antioxidant effects which invigorate the skin whilst improving skin tone and elasticity leading to fine lines disappearing. Vitamin A is commonly found in milk and milk products, fish, fish oil, egg yolks and liver.

Vitamin B is found in poultry, sea food, some fruit, bananas are very high in vitamin B, milk and dairy produce and green leafy vegetables. Vitamin B helps protein to be absorbed and assists red blood cells to develop. Some of the benefits seen from vitamin B include reducing the possibility of skin blemishes and it promotes healthy oil secretion.

Vitamin D enables regular tissue development and regeneration along with assisting with calcium permeation. The generation of new skin cells will not continue in a normal manner without suitable amounts of vitamin D in the body. And skin moisture levels are maintained to healthy standards because the correct amount of vitamin D is present. Everyday foods such as fish, particularly salmon or herring, milk products, eggs and liver all contain vitamin D.

Vitamin E is rich in antioxidant qualities and is particularly important in the healthy tissue development process. It even assists vitamin D to ensure that the skin has the correct amount of moisture. Being an antioxidant means that it helps prevent damage to the cells caused by free radicals. It also slows down the deterioration of the skin and continually assists skin repairs. Again vitamin E can be found in common foodstuffs. Actinic purpura is a skin condition which is quite common in older skin and is known to be helped by vitamin K. Other benefits of this vitamin include having the ability to reduce bruising and remove dark areas under the eyes. Vitamin K is usually found in vegetables and Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, tomatoes, broccoli and most green leafy vegetables all contain ample of amounts, in addition to lean meat too.

Some scientists think that selenium has properties which protect the skin from skin cancer and whole grain cereals, garlic, eggs and seafood have lots of it. Copper deficiency is rare and copper helps the skin maintain its elasticity. Zinc has been known to aid skin which is suffering from acne and calms down oil production. It can be found in lean meat, poultry and oysters.

A number of antioxidants can be beneficial when caring for skin. Antioxidants work by destroying free radicals which can cause problems in the future. DMAE is an antioxidant known to stabilize the membrane surrounding each cell which in turn reduces damage caused by sunlight or cigarette smoking. It also minimizes the risk of getting brown spots which are common as we grow older.

As can be seen when looking at the foods which contain most of the vitamins, a diet containing lots of vegetables is good for the skin. By having the correct balance of vitamins in ample quantities you know that you are giving your skin the best chance to stay healthy. And as with all vitamins and minerals, they are best absorbed into the body by eating food. Supplements should only be considered if there is some medical reason why you cannot get enough vitamins and minerals.

Although diet is the most important factor involved with maintaining healthy skin other issues include avoiding direct sunlight and wearing sunscreens whenever possible. After sun lotions are also useful to promote a healthy skin.

Daily care is also an important feature of healthy skin. Regular washing with ph balanced soaps and lotions can help to maintain a healthy skin.
