Being Skinny Without Going Insane

Many people are understandably perplexed about how to lose belly fat. Unlike arms or legs, their just aren’t enough safe exercises to tone and shape the belly. Sure, there are exercises like sit-ups or crunches, but often you need the help of a professional fitness trainer to make sure you are doing these exercises without hurting your neck, lower back or muscles. Here are a few tips for people wanting to lose belly fat.

Don’t Expect to Lose it All

The body needs a small layer of abdominal fat in order to keep vital internal organs warm and cushioned from wear and tear. People who live in cold climates need a slight ring of belly fat in order to stay warm enough. But, generally, bellies should not hang over pant or skirt waists and fall into folds and ripples to where the navel is completely hidden. Ask your doctor how much fat you need to lose. You may be surprised to learn that it is less than you thought.

Avoid Weight Loss Gimmicks

It takes time to burn belly fat permanently. Do not use gimmicks like diet pills or powders because they often do not work. You may lose some pounds, but it will mostly be water weight. Some pills and powders also contain very high amounts of caffeine. There is no magic pill or product to lose belly fat. You have to do it the long way of dieting and exercise.

Eat Less Calories

Teenagers and young adults can eat a lot of calories and not have excess belly fat. But our metabolism slows down once we reach 40. This means we can no longer indulge in fatty, calorie-laden foods like chili dogs with cheese. But we can still eat. We just need to switch to lower-calorie, lower-fat foods. These include vegetables, fruits, whole grains and some starchy foods like brown rice. Talk to your doctor about what foods you can and can’t eat on your new diet.

Stop Smoking

Tobacco smoke slows down your metabolism and dulls your taste buds so you instinctively reach for foods thick with fat, sugar and preservatives because they have stronger tastes. You need to stop smoking in order to lose belly fat. This will help speed up your metabolism and make your taste buds much more sensitive.

Exercise 30 Minutes a Day

You may not be able to perform aerobic exercise for 30 minutes a day, but this can be a short term fitness goal. For example, morbidly obese people may only be able to walk on a treadmill for 10 minutes a day. But if they keep up this regimen, then within a couple of months they can briskly walk for 30 minutes a day and a few months later try dancing, swimming or jogging.

Add Weights

Belly fat burns off faster when you lift weights. You do work some abdominal muscles when lifting weights or gently lowering weights. A combination exercise routine of aerobic exercise and at least two days a week lifting weights can help you to lose belly fat. These weights do not have to be barbells, but can start off being one liter bottles of water or even something lighter. You want to be sure that you can grip the object easily and that it isn’t slippery.
