Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects

This medication has multiple effects on the cardiovascular system and is a member of a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers. Calcium channels are receptors that are placed in a variety of areas within the cardiovascular system. When these channels become blocked it results in the blood vessels relaxing and lowering the heart rate. This results in the blood pressure being reduced and also the heart does not have to work as hard. This medication is successful in reducing the symptoms of raised blood pressure and pain in the chest but side effects may occur.

Unwelcome amlodipine besylate side effects may include yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), redness or warmth underneath the skin, joint and muscle pain, and an increase in the need to urinate. If you experience any of these side effects contact your doctor immediately.

Amlodipine (Norvasc, Pfizer, and generics) (as besylate, mesylate or maleate) is a long-acting calcium channel blocker (dihydropyridine (DHP) class) used as an anti-hypertensive and in the treatment of angina. Like other calcium channel blockers, amlodipine acts by relaxing the smooth muscle in the arterial wall, decreasing total peripheral resistance and hence reducing blood pressure. Iin angina it increases blood flow to the heart muscle (although DHP-class calcium channel blockers are more selective for arteries than myocardium, as the cardiac calcium channels are not of the dihydropyridine-type).
