There are several types of anxiety disorders that people can suffer with including panic disorder, phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder , obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Did you know that there are six common types of anxiety disorders? And, anybody of any age can actually suffer with them. Each disorder is very treatable and, depending on the severity, doctors may choose one of three treatments. Although, it’s not uncommon for more than one treatment to be used at the same time to help the patient. The treatments involved are:

It’s not uncommon for sufferers with this type of anxiety disorder to have flashbacks and nightmares along with anxious feelings and severe depression. The symptoms associated with the disorder are

  • Concentration difficulties

  • Relationship detachments

  • Edginess

  • Problems sleeping

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

What is obsessive compulsive disorder like? It’s when you have a recurring thought, impulse or image. The repetitive behaviors include always cleaning house, counting objects, etc. Another obsessive compulsive anxiety disorder is always washing your hands, which works to deflect one’s images and thoughts.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

This type of disorder occurs when there is needless worry about every little thing. The worrier is always expecting the worst. This chronic worrying can affect every aspect of their life such as social events, community events, school, work and family. The physical symptoms of this kind of anxiety disorder are cantankerousness, insomnia and muscle tension.

Social Anxiety Disorder

This disorder is defined as someone being very self-conscious and afraid to be in social situations. They are also afraid to meet new folks, go to parties, speak in public, etc. While many people have this fear, it can cause extreme fear for folks with this type of anxiety disorder. This is another very common type of anxiety disorder.

Panic Disorder

When someone has panic disorder, they may suffer with panic attacks, which are extreme physical symptoms with an overpowering feeling of terror. This disorder will have several physical symptoms like sweating, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath. The sufferer may feel like he/she is dying or is having a heart attack. Believe it or not, a panic attack is a normal reaction that’s much more intense…even when no danger is present.


The last type of anxiety disorder is phobia, which is the prodigious fear of something that has no immediate or real danger to it. Three common phobias people have are claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), Acrophobia (fear of heights) and Arachnophobia (fear of spiders). Many people who have these phobias are often embarrassed by them and they feel stupid because they know the fear is out of control but they’re unable to stop them from occurring.

However, with help from a trained professional, a person can overcome their fear and anxiety disorders. It’s not a process that can be done overnight; but, with continual help, a patient can begin to live a normal life.
